Oh gosh this weekend went quickly. The last few days have been so busy. Yesterday was my friend Alison’s bridal shower (photo below), which I and the other bridesmaids organized. It was the first shower I had ever been to. Alison’s housemate made the most incredible cupcakes with wedding dresses made out of fondant, and cake pops too that were amazing. Saturday I came back to Maine from NY and Friday was the big day at the Fashion Law Symposium, which I’d like to share with you.
Fordham Law is a leader in Fashion Law and often has lecturers and conferences dedicated to the field. Susan Scafidi, a Fordham Law professor started the fashion law institute and in the last few years it has really grown. I only stayed for the first half of the conference, but got to listen to two really enlightening lectures. The first was on whether a fashion house should consider an initial public offering (IPO). Two of the main speakers were the General Counsel of Liz Claiborne and an attorney at Paul Weiss that worked on Michael Kors’ IPO. This was extremely relevant, considering that Michael Kors recently did an IPO and other larger fashion houses are considering it as well. We discussed the pros and cons of doing an IPO and why even some corporations that do go public, eventually go private again in order to retain more creative control of the company.
The second lecture was more relevant to what I want to do as a career, which is work on anti-counterfeiting efforts. Anyone who knows me, knows how I am against knock-offs and counterfeit merchandise. Not only is itĀ embarrassingĀ to be walking around with a fake, but the human rights issues around counterfeit merchandise and where it comes from are huge. We heard speakers from INTA, the IACC, and several firms. It’s incredible how advanced counterfeiting efforts have become and just how many websites are out there selling fake merchandise.
Overall, a really fantastic day, only reconfirming the fact that I want to enter the field of fashion law! I hope everyone has a fantastic start to their week xox
